The Rivian R2 is finally hitting the road, and we're starting to see more of them here in the Bay Area.
When a brand-new R2 comes into Dynamic Detailing, one of the first things we talk about is protecting the paint before the miles start adding up. The R2 is built for adventure, but that also means its exterior is going to see plenty of road debris, dirt, bugs, gravel, and everything else that comes with driving.
For this 2027 Rivian R2, we installed SunTek Reaction Paint Protection Film (PPF) on the full front, paired with Ceramic Pro ION ceramic coating over the vehicle.
It's a combination we really like because the two products serve different purposes.
Why Put PPF on a New Rivian R2?
The front of any vehicle takes the most abuse from the road.
Rock chips, gravel, sand, bugs and other road debris can hit the front bumper, hood, fenders and mirrors at highway speeds. Once that debris damages the factory paint, a ceramic coating isn't going to prevent the impact.
That's where PPF comes in.
For the R2, we installed SunTek Reaction PPF on the full front, protecting the areas that are most exposed to road debris while keeping the original appearance of the vehicle.
SunTek Reaction is a premium paint protection film that combines physical impact protection with a highly hydrophobic topcoat and self-healing properties. SunTek says Reaction uses its Tetrashield protective resin system and carries a 12-year limited manufacturer warranty when professionally installed.
Why We Chose SunTek Reaction PPF
There are a lot of PPF options on the market, but we specifically chose SunTek Reaction for this R2.
One of the things that makes Reaction different is its topcoat.
Traditional PPF already gives you a physical layer between the road and your paint. Reaction adds a very slick, hydrophobic surface that helps water and dirt release more easily.
According to SunTek, Reaction is designed to provide:
Self-healing protection from surface scratches
A highly hydrophobic surface
Easier cleaning
Resistance to staining from contaminants such as bird droppings and tree sap
A clear, high-gloss finish
Protection against road hazards such as gravel, salt and grit
A 12-year limited manufacturer warranty
The self-healing properties are especially useful on a daily-driven vehicle. SunTek explains that the film's surface can repair many scratches with heat from the sun, a warm panel, engine heat or warm water.
Full Front PPF for the Rivian R2
For this R2, we focused the PPF coverage on the full front of the vehicle.
This is the area we generally consider the highest priority for PPF because it's constantly exposed to whatever gets kicked up from the road.
Full-front PPF provides protection across the major impact areas while allowing the rest of the vehicle to retain its original factory finish.
For a new vehicle like the Rivian R2, this can be especially worthwhile. It's much easier to protect the factory paint before it has accumulated rock chips and other damage than it is to try to correct those problems later.
Ceramic Pro ION on the Rivian R2
PPF takes care of the physical protection. For the rest of the vehicle, we installed Ceramic Pro ION ceramic coating.
Ceramic Pro ION uses a two-part system consisting of an ION Base and ION Top Coat. According to Ceramic Pro, the top coat enhances the coating's hydrophobic properties along with its chemical and abrasive resistance. The ION package carries a 7-year warranty with the required annual services.
One of the biggest reasons customers choose ceramic coating is maintenance.
The hydrophobic surface makes water bead and run off more easily, while helping dirt and other contamination release from the surface during washing.
That is particularly useful on a vehicle like the R2 that's going to see everything from daily commuting to weekend adventures.
Why Combine PPF and Ceramic Coating?
This is one of the most common questions we get:
"Do I need PPF if I'm getting a ceramic coating?"
Our answer is yes if you're looking for both impact protection and surface protection.
PPF and ceramic coating aren't really competing products. They do different jobs.
PPF protects against physical impact.
Think rock chips, gravel and road debris.
Ceramic coating protects the surface.
Think UV exposure, environmental contamination, dirt, bugs, bird droppings and easier maintenance.
And you can apply ceramic coating over PPF as well, giving the film the same hydrophobic and easier-cleaning benefits.
That's why we like the combination of SunTek Reaction PPF on the full front + Ceramic Pro ION over the vehicle.
You get a physical barrier where the vehicle needs it most, while the ceramic coating provides protection and easier maintenance across the rest of the exterior.
Protecting a Rivian Built for Adventure
Rivian designed the R2 to be comfortable on the road while still being ready for adventure. The current R2 lineup includes Performance, Premium and Standard models, with the Performance model offering dual-motor AWD, up to 330 miles of EPA-estimated range and 656 horsepower.
Whether your R2 is primarily a daily driver or you're planning to take it out on the trails, the paint is still exposed to the same basic problem every vehicle faces:
The road doesn't care how new your vehicle is.
That's why we recommend protecting the paint early.
A new R2 with clean factory paint is the perfect candidate for PPF and ceramic coating. You're starting with a clean slate instead of waiting until the vehicle already has chips, scratches and contamination that need to be addressed.
SunTek Reaction PPF + Ceramic Pro ION in Santa Clara
At Dynamic Detailing, we specialize in protecting new and enthusiast vehicles with Paint Protection Film, Ceramic Pro ceramic coatings, paint correction and ceramic window tint.
For Rivian owners, our approach is simple: protect the areas that take the most abuse with PPF, then use ceramic coating to protect the rest of the exterior and make the vehicle easier to maintain.
For this 2027 Rivian R2, that meant:
SunTek Reaction Full Front PPF
Ceramic Pro ION Ceramic Coating
It's a great combination for an R2 owner who wants to preserve the factory paint without necessarily covering the entire vehicle in PPF.
If you're taking delivery of a new Rivian R2 in Santa Clara, San Jose, or anywhere in the Bay Area and want to protect it from day one, we'd be happy to help you figure out which combination makes the most sense for how you drive.
Protect it. Drive it. Enjoy it.
